Deep in the cool understory
of a primeval wood we wander
where too little light can penetrate
to support more than fairy gardens
of fine emerald mosses and forest fungi
Until we come upon a sun-filled break
perhaps a half-acre where once
stood a majestic member of the
tree-lords of the biome, this one
now long gone.
But there is no loss to mourn here
for One who isn’t really gone,
just gone on.
Here the fresh air and full radiance
have called out new growth
Adolescent descendants of the mighty One
Humble in their youth and filled
With all the organic promise
Of the One who gave herself,
every recycled cell, for their future
This is the joyful legacy
of a good life well given,
like every deep friend who passes through
the glade of our lives and feeds our future.
